I think as long as you make sure they're comfortable with you and they like talking to you, they're going to say yes. The key is like anything, following along with the conversation, and seeing where you have an opening. A lot of times when I know I want to ask the girl out, I'm directing the conversation in that direction. A lot of times if a girl is interested, she'll give you her number before you even have to ask her. I've got the first date part down. It's after that we're still working on. But if you have confidence issues, OKCupid is a great way to resolve them, IMO. I know I'm late to this but in case anyone is still reading this, here's a story: I checked a guy out last night, wrote him a message, hit 'send' and got a message from him right back. We were both messaging each other at the same time. I was sacked out on the couch and bored, and he was also clearly not doing much, so I asked if he wanted to get dinner with me (I'd been planning to go out anyway because I wasn't feeling cooking.) He was totally down, we had a great dinner, and have been texting all day. When the vibe is there, go for it. Unless someone's initial message to me is 'Hey wanna go out?' With no other context, there's not really any such thing as too soon. Kind of interesting that it seems to be so popular in the US to meet really soon. Most european (well, German mostly) people seem to be more the 'when do you want to meet in person? After a few weeks' type. At least for people who are not basically from the same city I don't think it's a big problem though. If it clicks (no matter if for friendship or potential dating) after a few messages or during chat switching e.g. To Skype is a good idea. To be honest, I'd never meet with someone from the Internet without talking to that person at least once or twice on Skype. I think that way it's much easier to figure out if someone if genuine or a fake/troll (or worse, a guy:p).
